Corrosion behavior of aluminium- molybdenum surface composites developed by friction stir processing

Prof. Amit Arora with other panel presenters and students

Abstract

Effect of molybdenum reinforcement particles on the corrosion resistance of the Al-Mo surface composite prepared using single pass and double pass friction stir processing is studied. Surface composites exhibit better corrosion resistance with higher corrosion potential and lower corrosion rate based on the potentiodynamic testing. Addition of more Mo particles using second groove further increases corrosion resistance. Second processing pass improves the corrosion resistance due to more homogeneously distributed fine Mo particles. Surface composites show charge transfer controlled corrosion behavior whereas the base alloy exhibited mixed corrosion behavior. Pitting is reduced where Mo particles are present in the surface composites.
